The Waverly Post 142 baseball team swept a doubleheader with Lancaster Post 11 on Sunday, winning by scores of 10-0 and and 6-2.

In the early game, it didn’t take the Shockers long to get in a groove. They exploded for four runs in the first inning and added six more in the second inning. After a line of showers pushed through the area in the fourth inning, the teams agreed to end the first game.

Minford graduate Dylan Shockley led the way for Waverly 142, going 3-for-3 with a double and a triple. Fellow Falcons Matt Joyce, Jared Alley and Shawn Mersiel combined for four RBIs. Portsmouth graduate Sky Oliver went 1-for-2 with an RBI of his own.

South Webster’s Garrett Rawlins picked up the win in game one, pitching all four innings while striking out three batters.

The Shockers needed some late-inning magic in game two to come away with the victory. Waverly 142 opened the game with a run in the top of the first, but Lancaster answered in the third with a run of their own.

Each team traded runs in the fifth inning, and it wouldn’t be until the ninth until either scored again. That’s when Waverly pushed across four runs in the top of the inning, which proved to be the difference.

Once again, Joyce led the way for the Shockers. He homered twice in the game and added a double, driving in two runs. He was also the game’s winning pitcher, throwing 4.1 innings in relief while striking out six batters.

“Shock really came up big for is in the second game,” Post 142 coach Jonathon Teeters said. “He’s a leader on this team and it certainly showed today. He put the team on his back and got it done.”

Minford’s Seth Jenkins started the game for Post 142. He threw 4.2 innings, walking just a single batter and allowing just one run.

With the win, the Shockers improve to 10-2. They host Hillsboro Post 129 in Waverly on Tuesday.
