RUSSELL, Ky. — According to reports from Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital (OLBH), Carol Sweeney, an employee at the OLBH Women’s Center Boutique (Bellefonte Centre, 1000 Ashland Drive) has earned her certification as a mastectomy fitter from the American Board for Certification (ABC) in Orthotics, Prosthetics & Pedorthics.
Kevin Compton, Bon Secours Kentucky Health System Communications & Advocacy Specialist, said they are proud of Carol for the hard work that goes into becoming certified.
According to OLBH, an ABC certified mastectomy fitter is a health professional specifically educated and trained in breast prostheses and post-mastectomy services.
This includes fitting, adjusting or modifying devices that reflect the level of education and training received. With Sweeney’s certification and that of boutique manager Lou Ann Crace, the OLBH Women’s Center now boasts two certified mastectomy fitters.
Sweeney is a native of Maine raised in upstate New York, and previously worked at Kentucky Electric Steel as well as spending time as a legal assistant. A breast cancer survivor, Sweeney joined the OLBH Women’s Center Boutique in June 2014.
The OLBH Women’s Center Boutique offers prosthesis, wigs, bras and other items. In addition to the boutique, the OLBH Women’s Center offers digital mammography, pap tests, breast ultrasound, surgical consultations, minimally invasive breast biopsy, DEXA-scan to screen for osteoporosis, genetic testing, clinical breast exams and a women’s health library.
