NEW BOSTON – The Glenwood Lady Tigers rebounded from a loss to Rock Hill Monday night to take out the Wellston Golden Rockets in the Glenwood Holiday Classic consolation game Tuesday evening. Kayla Wiley’s Lady Tigers took control of the game early, and never looked back, defeating the Golden Rockets 60-44.
“I thought we played pretty hard down the stretch,” Wiley said. “At the beginning of the game our zone, that we set in there, was working pretty well for us. All 10 girls got out there, and got after it tonight. I’m proud of them.”
The Lady Tigers were stunned Monday night with a last minute three pointer by Rock Hill to give the Redwomen a one point edge with only a few seconds left in the game.
“We came out with a lot more energy today than we did yesterday,” Wiley said. “We didn’t have to fight back. We got a nice little cushion. I’m proud of them for pushing back when things just weren’t going their way.”
Glenwood lead Wellston 31-19 at halftime, and increased their lead throughout the second half, quickly squelching any momentum the Golden Rockets could gather.
Wiley said she talked to her team at halftime about not letting Wellston back into the game by easing up in the second half.
“We’ve been trying to work on that a little bit more, playing all four quarters, and not letting up,” Wiley said. “I thought we did a good job. Our guards did a good job pressuring the ball and Ali Hamilton, Kaylee Stone, and Cammy (Oiler) did a good job rebounding for us.”
Oiler, Mariah Buckley, and Hamilton all scored in the teens Tuesday night, each separated by one point each.
Oiler led Glenwood with 16 points against Wellston. Buckley finished just behind, with 15 points, while Hamilton was a single point under Buckley, finishing with 14 points.
All three girls also accounted for the three three-pointers for Glenwood.
“I thought, down low, that Ali did a good job inside and out, passing the ball whenever she was double teamed,” Wiley said. “I thought Mariah did a good job of picking when she needed to penetrate and drive, and Cammy did a good job of seeing the floor, driving, and shooting when she needed to.”
Wiley was also happy with Stone’s performance Tuesday night.
“She was our little trash player,” Wiley said. “She was in there getting every loose ball she could, and every rebound she could. I thought she did a good job on that end.”
After defeating the Wellston Golden Rockets Tuesday night, the Glenwood Lady Tigers will once again play Wellston Monday, January 4th. The game is scheduled to tip at 6 p.m., and will be played at Glenwood High School in New Boston.
