The Scioto County Sheriff’s Office is on the lookout for two persons allegedly connected with a shooting early Friday morning on Labold Ave. in Portsmouth.

According to a press release, the sheriff’s office received a 911 call at 10:28 a.m. Friday from a male stating he and a friend were riding four wheelers on Labold when a black car, driven by a white female, pulled up and stopped. A male passenger got out of the car and allegedly fired several shots at the two other men. The caller told the Sheriff’s office he had been shot in his arm.

The sheriff’s office stated deputies and detectives along with Porter Township EMS and firefighters responded to the location and upon arrival observed the victim, Jim Smith, had a minor injury to his arm apparently caused by a bullet.

The other victim at the scene, identified as Billy J. Arthur, did not sustain any injuries. No further information was released regarding the victims.

Sheriff’s office Capt. John W. Murphy stated an investigation later identified the driver of the vehicle as Staci Sowards, 35, of Wheelersburg. The alleged shooter was named as Douglas Jones, 39, who is currently listed as homeless.

Officials said the two suspects fled the area of the shooting in a black Mitsubishi Galant with Ohio registration HFD1152 . The vehicle had been reported to law enforcement as having been taken from its owner for unauthorized use. The sheriff’s office submitted charges through Portsmouth Municipal Court against both suspects for second degree felonious assault.

Murphy stated both suspects should be considered armed and dangerous and are known to have a history of drug abuse. In their press release, officials did not speculate as to any motive behind the shooting.

Anyone with information regarding this case should contact Det. Jodi Conkel at (740) 351-1091. Officials said all calls will remain confidential.
