CHILLICOTHE — Portsmouth Post 23 and the Chillicothe Post 62 Riverbats faced-off against each other Thursday evening in Chillicothe, Ohio, which saw the Riverbats avenge their loss to Portsmouth Post 23 at Branch Rickey Park in Portsmouth, OH a few weeks prior.

The Riverbats shut-out Post 23, 11-0 in the American Legion Region V league game.

One bad inning set the tone for the remainder of the game for Portsmouth Post 23, which prevented them from being able to overcome their deficit.

“The first inning really hurt us,” Portsmouth Post 23 coach Matt Miller said after the loss. “We did not come ready to play at all and got ourselves in a deficit that we couldn’t overcome.”

Miller sent Brandon Denney to the mound to start the game, but the hurler was unable to go deep into the game, lasting a single inning. Denney gave up nine runs in his inning, five of which were earned. The Riverbats got six hits off Denney, who also walked four batters.

Billy Book came in to relieve the troubled starter, going three innings for Post 23. He allowed two runs, one earned, off six hits and walked one batter.

Pitching was not alone in the struggles of Thursday evening’s game in Chillicothe, as Portsmouth Post 23 also struggled at the plate. Post 23 totaled for two hits against the Riverbats.

Cody Wiltshire went 1-for-2 Thursday in the loss to Chillicothe Post 62. His only hit was a double, the only extra-base hit Post 23 would have against the Riverbats.

Drew Cassidy was 1-for-1 on the evening and accounted for the other hit for Post 23.

Although there is never a good time for a loss, Thursday’s downing by Post 62 came at a bad time for Post 23.

“We have to get a consistent effort, throw strikes, hit and field the ball and we didn’t have that tonight,” Miller said. “Good news is we can turn the page and come ready to play tomorrow (Friday, July 15, 2016) against Post 142.”

The game against Post 142 will be the last regular season game for both teams, as tournament games begin Sunday at the historic VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio. Post 23 will face the Chillicothe Post 62 Riverbats again in the opening round of the tournament. First pitch for the game is set for 11:00 a.m. Sunday, July 17, 2016.

With the loss to the Riverbats Thursday evening, Portsmouth Post 23’s record falls to 8-19 overall in the season, with a 2-7 record in Region V play.
