Trojans deliver in extra innings

It took extra innings but the Portsmouth Trojans prevailed on the road, picking up a 3-1 victory over the Fairland Dragons.

Ryan Williams picked up the victory, pitching the last three innings while only allowing one hit and issuing one free pass.

Trailing 1-0, the Trojans finally cracked the scoreboard in the top of the seventh inning. After a pair of walks and a bunt single by Vincent Schwamberger, Reese Johnson had the opportunity to take advantage of the situation and he delivered a fielder’s choice, which tied the game at one apiece.

In the top of the eighth, Zach DeLotell led off with a double and then proceeded to steal third. Later in the inning, DeLotell was still occupying third base with Dylan Mullins sitting on second after reaching via an error and then stealing second. With two outs and two on, Blake Wedebrook hit a single, which gave the Trojans the go ahead and eventual game-winning run.

Portsmouth added an insurance run when Wedebrook attempted to steal second, which allowed Mullins to ahead for home on the throw to second.

With the victory, Portsmouth tied for second place in the Ohio Valley Conference.
