Lady Pirates poach Panthers 14-0

WHEELERSBURG — It was when five straight pirates reached base in the bottom of the first that Wheelersburg fans knew the Lady Pirates were clicking. It was around the same time when you could hear a collective sigh from Chesapeake fans.

After leadoff hitter Kalle Coleman reached base on an error, three straight Pirates hit for RBI doubles on their way to a big seven run first inning. Eight Lady Pirates batted in runs on the evening: Raygan Reyes, Michal Cunningham, Kalle Coleman, Breanna Klaiber, Kasey Bergan, Laiken Salyers, Taylor McQuay, and Lexy Traylor all brought runs home.

Michal Cunningham came a triple away from hitting for the cycle. She had a single, a double, a home run in the third inning combined with three total RBIs and a steal. The senior, who is already committed to LSU, appears ready to make her mark on the tournament.

Faith Howard pitched a strong game as well for the Pirates. She gave up a single hit and a walk while striking on five batters in the shutout effort.

“We don’t believe in coasting to the finish line,” laughed Wheelersburg Head Coach Teresa Ruby. “I told the girls they needed to come out and look sharp today. We needed to put our best foot forward because now you are in one and done territory. I was really pleased with how we hit the ball, we had three doubles in a row that were nice sharp hits.

“Defensively, we were solid too. Michal made a great play to start the game at shortstop, and Faith pitched a terrific game. It was a nice all around team win.”

Wheelersburg will now face off against the Piketon Lady Red streaks in the next round of tournament play. That game will take place Thursday, May 19th at Unioto High School in Chillicothe, Ohio. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:30 P.M.

“We really try to focus on what we do. Just on things we have control over. We will try to stay sharp, which is always the task in the tournament when you have a bunch of days off in between. This win gives us some momentum, so we just have to play our game on Thursday.”
