Jeeps win in extra innings

SOUTH WEBSTER — The South Webster Jeeps and the Valley Indians needed extra innings to decide which team would come out victorious in the contest between the two SOC II teams. In the end, it would take 10 innings to determine the winner, as the Jeeps edged out the Indians 5-4 in S0uth Webster.

With the game tied 4-4 headed into the bottom of the 10th inning, South Webster had a chance to win the game by getting one baserunner to cross the plate.

Shane Zimmerman started off the inning with a pop out, but the Jeeps got their first baserunner of the inning when the next batter, Alek Blevins got a single and reached first safely. Trevor Coriell nearly ended the game, by driving in Blevins, but the ball got stuck in the windscreen on the outfield fence in South Webster, resulting in a ground-rule double, and forcing Blevins to go no further than third base.

Valley decided to intentionally walk the next South Webster batter, Nate Hadinger, which loaded the bases with only one out.

With the bases loaded, Bradley Gee came up to bat with an opportunity to win the game for the South Webster Jeeps. Gee drove a 1-1 pitch into left field, to score Blevins and win the game.

Garrett Rawlins got the win for South Webster in a relief appearance.

“Garrett threw the ball extremely well tonight and made things easy on our defense,” South Webster baseball coach Ryan McClintic said. “He’s usually on the mound as a starting pitcher, but his performance in relief tonight really inspired our team to battle back in the game.”

Rawlins entered the game in the fifth inning and pitched the remainder of the game, totaling six innings worth of work. He only allowed one hit, and one walk during his time on the mound, and struck out four batters.

“Valley has a very good baseball team,” McClintic said. “I’m proud of the way our guys fought back after being down 4-0 early in the game.”

The Jeeps will travel to Waverly on Wednesday afternoon, as they take on the Waverly Tigers. First pitch has been set for 5:00 p.m.

Valley will also be on the road Wednesday evening, as they travel to West Portsmouth to take on the Portsmouth West Senators. Game time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
