The Southern Ohio Spartans are traveling to West Virginia to face the Storm Saturday night.
Southern Ohio (5-3, 4-2) has been one of the highest scoring teams in the Blue Collar Football League this season. Other than the two games against the West Virginia Lightning and the Portsmouth Warriors, the Spartans have averaged over 40 points per game.
While he doesn’t know a lot about the West Virginia (4-2, 4-2), Spartans head coach JoJo Parker knows they are big, which he plans on using to his advantage.
“It depends on how are players come out to play but If they are big, we’re just going to try to out run them,” Parker said.
Southern Ohio’s offense will run through the legs on tailbacks Duke Edwards and L.J. Adams.
“(They) are going to be key to our success,” Parker said.
On the other side of the ball, the Spartan defense got back on track against the Zanesville Rivermonsters on June 27 after a long night against the Portsmouth Warriors on June 20. According to Parker, the defense suffered too many plays where players where playing out of position in the team’s 4-2 scheme.
However, Parker allowed his defense to have more freedom to roam sideline to sideline.
“I think we are going to play more read and react, heads up football,” Parker said. “We are going to let them be athletes and make plays.”
Two keys players on defense will be Dalton Stamm and Rhamel Hatcher.
“(Stamm) played fullback and defensive line, but last game we threw him in at linebacker and he played exceptionally well,” Parker said.
After their game against the Rivermonsters, Parker is excited to see if Hatcher can build on the momentum in sustained in that victory.
“He had an awesome game last game, so we’re expecting that to carry on over,” Parker said.
