PIKEVILLE, Ky – Former Wheelersburg High School football standout Camron Parsley was recently named the first Mid-South Conference (MSC) East Division Defensive Player of the Year. Parsley earned the honors for his performance at the University of Pikeville (UPIKE) during the 2015 season.

The former Pirate ended the 2015 UPIKE football season with 46 tackles. Seven of Parsley’s tackles were for a loss of yardage, and he also forced two fumbles, and picked up a pair of sacks in his first season of play.

Parsley had a breakout performance in his collegiate debut this season, against Bluefield College (Virginia). In that game, Parsley acquired 11 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for a loss, a season best performance.

His solid play against Bethel University (Tennessee), helped lead the UPIKE Bears to a shutout victory, thanks in part to his six tackles and two sacks.

Parsley was chosen by the coaches in the NAIA MSC East Division, who each select a potential winner of the award. Coaches are not allowed to vote for players on their own team.

A 2014 graduate, Parsley played football and baseball for the Wheelersburg Pirates.

“He was a player on our 2013 team that finished 11-2, where we lost in the Regional Finals to Bishop Hartley,” Wheelersburg Football coach Rob Woodward said. “Camron was an outstanding player who worked extremely hard, and was a captain on the team.”

Parsley was the defensive leader on that year’s Pirate football team, and was known for his work ethic, according to Woodward.

“He had an outstanding work ethic,” Woodward said. “When it came to the weight room or on the field, it was something he continued to carry that with him into college.”

He was red-shirted his freshman year, but used that time to focus his talents. Spending a lot of time on the practice field, Parsley became one of those players others feared to line up against, according to Woodward.

During his red-shirted year, Parsley also worked hard to improve his academic performance, to the same level as his on-field performance.

He got his first start this past season, and also earned Academic All Mid-South Conference honors in November.

“That was a huge accomplishment for him,” Woodward said. “He has really excelled and has done an outstanding job.”

Woodward and Parsley have kept in touch after the young player left for college.

“I always love to have him come back around, and have our kids see him,” Woodward said. “His work ethic is something I want them to model, as they continue to work as young athletes for me.”

Parsley will be back in Wheelersburg next month, along with the rest of his teammates on the UPIKE Bears football team.

“Pikeville will be coming here to Wheelersburg, at Ed Miller Stadium, for their spring game,” Woodward said.

The game is set for Saturday, April 16th, and has a projected start time of 1:00 p.m.

This will be the second time UPIKE will hold their spring game at Ed Miller Stadium.
