LUCASVILLE — Valley senior Blake Wood was the Indians’ hero in extra innings.
Wood’s walk off single with no outs in the bottom of the eighth inning scored fellow senior Breckon Williams and lifted Valley (1-1) to their first win of the season — a 3-2 decision over visiting South Webster.
Wood’s game-winning hit came off South Webster’s Aidan Andrews, who entered in the eighth in relief of Jeeps’ starting pitcher Robert Martin.
Martin and Valley sophomore George Arnett were lights-out in both teams’ Southern Ohio Conference Division II opener, each allowing just six hits apiece, and combining for one earned run.
Arnett pitched all eight innings for Valley, striking out 12 batters while Martin’s day was finished through seven as he struck out 10 Indian hitters.
SW’s Jaren Lower had an RBI single in the top of the third to give the Jeeps an early 1-0 lead. After Valley took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth, Jeeps senior Billy Jones tied things up at 2-apiece on a single to center field which scored Andrews.
Wood’s winning RBI was the lone RBI by Valley for the game, but couldn’t have come at a better time. The Indians did manage seven hits as a team with junior Hunter Edwards leading the way going 2-of-3 and drawing a walk in his four at-bats.
Both Valley and South Webster (1-1) will be competing as Division IV programs this postseason and will meet again at SW on April 19 to begin the second round of SOC II play.
