Wheelersburg 70, Oak Hill 38
WHEELERSBURG — Behind senior Kaylee Darnell’s 33-point outing, the Wheelersburg Lady Pirates coasted to a 70-38 home win over the Oak Hill Lady Oaks in Southern Ohio Conference Division II play.
Twenty-nine of Darnell’s game-high 33 came during the first three quarters of play, as the Lady Pirates took a 59-28 lead into the final period.
Scoring half of ‘Burg’s 28 points in the third quarter, Darnell was the lone Lady Pirate to reach double figures in the victory.
Ellie Kallner scored nine points on four field goals, while Alaina Keeney and Macee Eaton scored eight apiece.
For the game, Wheelersburg made six threes — two each by Keeney and Darnell and one apiece by Madison Whitaker and Kallner.
Whitaker finished with seven points, sinking 2-of-4 free throws to contribute to ‘Burg’s 10-of-16 mark from the foul line.
Oak Hill’s Chloe Chambers scored a team-high 15 points on six made field goals and 3-of-6 foul shooting.
Baylee Howell and Olivia Clarkson each scored nine points for the Lady Oaks.
The Lady Pirates’ win was their 31st consecutive in SOC II play, improving their record to a perfect 3-0 — all in the league — in the early season.
Oak Hill is now 0-2, as Monday’s matchup marked its SOC II opener.
Wheelersburg returns to SOC II action on Thursday (Dec. 10), when it will host Northwest in a meeting of last season’s top-two conference finishers.
Notre Dame 59, Ironton St. Joe 26
IRONTON — Making a season-best 10 threes, the Notre Dame Lady Titans earned a 59-26 Southern Ohio Conference Division I road win over Ironton St. Joe.
Senior guard Ava Hassel knocked down seven of those long-range makes, including four in the game’s opening quarter.
In fact, Hassel scored 22 of the Lady Titans’ 30 first-half points — as part of her game-high 25.
Claire Dettwiller made each of her three field goals during the first half as part of her seven points in the win.
Sophomore Annie Dettwiller scored the second-most points for Notre Dame with eight — six in the third period and two in the second.
Gracie Ashley scored each of her seven points in the game’s final quarter, including going 5-of-6 from the foul line with one made field goal.
Kamryn Bradford sank two third-quarter threes for her six points, while freshmen Katie Strickland and Annabelle Ball combined for six on three makes.
Ironton St. Joe’s Bella Whaley scored 15 of the Lady Flyers’ 26 points, 13 of which came in the first half.
Notre Dame improves to 4-0 following Monday’s win in SOC I play, including 3-0 in the league itself — as the Lady Titans’ official SOC I win streak now stands at 79.
The Lady Titans are off from games for the rest of the week, before welcoming Division III Fairland to Portsmouth on Saturday (Dec. 12) in a non-league matchup.
