Valley 2, New Boston 0
Behind a six-save shutout from senior goalkeeper Wesley Holbrook and a pair of goals from Austin Sommers, the Valley Indians defeated the New Boston Tigers 2-0 in Southern Ohio Conference Division I play. With the win, Valley improves to 1-0-1 through its first two contests.
Sommers put the Indians ahead of the Tigers in the ninth minute with a goal assisted by A.J. Johnson. Then, in the 75th minute, Sommers connected on his second goal, this time assisted by Lucie Ashkettle, to put Valley ahead 2-0 with just five minutes remaining.
Valley will travel to Southeastern on Wednesday for a non-league road game versus the Panthers.
St. Joe 11, Chesapeake 1
Wheelersburg 2, Athens 0
In a rematch of the the Lady Pirates’ sectional semifinal win over Athens as a Division II program last postseason, once-again Division III program Wheelersburg blanked the visiting Athens Lady Bulldogs 2-0 at Ed Miller Stadium.
Senior Ellie Kallner scored the Lady Pirates’ first goal of the contest, one assisted by Annie Coriell to put Wheelersburg ahead 1-0 with 15 minutes left in the first half. Freshman Bella Miller scored Wheelersburg’s second goal, this one assisted by Laney Eller on a cross — the game’s final goal to push the Lady Pirates ahead 2-0.
Brynley Preston made six saves for Wheelersburg, the second time in as many games the Lady Pirates haven’t allowed a goal.
Wheelersburg will travel to Ironton St. Joe on Wednesday boasting a 2-0-0 record, and 1-0-0 in league play following last week’s victory over West.

St. Joe 14, Chesapeake 0
Minford 3, New Boston 0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-10)
Minford improved to 2-1 following its straight-set sweep of New Boston on Saturday in a non-league home match. With the loss, the Lady Tigers fall to 1-2.
For the Lady Falcons, senior Ally Coriell had a team-high 12 kills. Minford’s Macy Puckett finished with 10 kills while McKenna Higbee had six.
Minford senior setter Livi Shonkwiler finished with a team-high 24 assists, while Bella Reffit and Kynedi Davis had seven and six assists, respectively.
Both teams will be back in action on Monday as Minford hosts Oak Hill in SOC II play and New Boston hosts Wellston in non-league play.
Wheelersburg 3, Fairfield 0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-10)
With a straight-set home win over Fairfield, the Wheelersburg Lady Pirates volleyball team claimed its second victory in three days to start its 2020 campaign.
Kylee Barney finished with a team-high 11 kills and two blocks in the win. Ryleigh Meeker had 10 kills and a team-high five blocks while Jaiden Missler had a team-high seven digs and eight kills.
Lauren Jolly had a team-high 29 assists as the Lady Pirates’ setter.
From the service line, three Lady Pirates totaled at least eight points — Lyndsay Heimbach had a team-high 11, Madison Whitaker with nine, and Kaylee Darnell with eight.
Wheelersburg will host South Webster on Tuesday in a matchup of early-season SOC II favorites.
South Webster 3, Notre Dame 0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-12)
In a matchup of defending Division IV district champions, the South Webster Lady Jeeps defeated the Notre Dame Lady Titans in a straight-set sweep on their home court.
Lady Jeeps junior Faith Maloney led SW with a team-high 19 kills, 11 digs and four ace serves. Graci Claxon had a team-high 16 digs while Bella Claxon had a team-high 11 assists. Kendall Bender had 10 assists in the win.
Gwen Messer and Bri Claxon had five and three digs, respectively, with Messer adding six kills.
South Webster will head to Wheelersburg on Tuesday for a matchup of early-season favorites in the SOC II race.
