SSU baseball, softball look to big contests this weekend

While the basketball and track and field programs will be participating in postseason and championship competition this week and weekend, the baseball and softball programs also will have important contests of their own, with the baseball program facing Ohio Christian, Cincinnati-Clermont and Cumberland (Tenn.) over the course of the week and the softball program opening their season up with a trip to North Myrtle Beach, S.C. that will include eight official contests.

Steve Whittaker’s program will begin its season with a trip to Fastpitch Dreams in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. While there, the Bears will play in eight official contests that will count for or against the team’s record, and 12 overall, including bouts against Chestnut Hill (Pa.), Brescia (Ky.), Midway (Ky.), Piedmont International (N.C.), and Rivier (N.H.). Shawnee State will play Chestnut Hill, Brescia, and Midway twice during the course of the trip.

Ashtyn Saunders, who serves as a utility player for Shawnee State, is closing in on history. The senior, who has 36 steals to her name, sits just nine swipes away from Abbey Barrett’s record total of 45 steals for a career. Saunders, who is the team’s returning leader in stolen bases (11), steal attempts (13), hits (65), runs (45), at-bats (145), and total bases (76), also led the team in batting average with a strong .445.

Haley Rawlins, who made just five errors in 127 defensive chances last year, and Gracie Keplinger, who posted just one error in 72 defensive chances, will head up Shawnee State’s defensive efforts in 2020.

Shawnee State’s baseball program, led by Phil Butler, is still on schedule to play two games in back-to-back days when SSU takes on Ohio Christian (2 p.m. on Tuesday) and Cincinnati-Clermont (1 p.m. Wednesday) at Branch Rickey Park. The Bears are also scheduled to face Cumberland (Tenn.) in a three-game series that serves as SSU’s Mid-South Conference opener, which begins at 3 p.m. Friday (single nine-inning contest) and is capped with a doubleheader Saturday (two seven-inning games beginning at Noon).

Kyle Wisniewski (0-0, 1.13 ERA) continues to pace Shawnee State’s output. The junior has struck out 16 batters and walked just four in 16 innings of work en route to a four-to-one strikeout-to-walk ratio.
