Bears’ baseball begins long homestand

Following an 11-game road trip southward to start the season, the baseball program at Shawnee State will begin a homestand where the Bears are scheduled to play 11 games at Branch Rickey Park in a 10-day stretch, beginning with four seven-inning doubleheader contests against Concordia (Mich.) — two each on Saturday and Sunday.

Game time begins at 1 p.m.

A complete rundown of the four-game set is below:

SSU notes

  • Shawnee State is 1-10 to start the 2020 season. The Bears, however, defeated Milligan (Tenn.) by a 7-4 margin to split a Saturday doubleheader against the Buffaloes and have lost three additional games by a run.
  • George Duran (.346 batting average, double, triple, five RBI, six runs scored, and three stolen bases in three attempts) has been the main offensive producer for the Bears.
  • Pitching-wise, SSU’s staff has been led by Kyle Wisnewski, who has struck out 12 and only walked three in nine innings of work en route to a 2.00 ERA. Wisnewski does not have a decision credited on his behalf yet this season.
  • Phil Butler (18-34) is in his second season as the head coach at Shawnee State.

Concordia (Mich.) notes

  • Concordia (Mich.) is 6-2 to start the 2020 season. The Cardinals swept a four-game series from Wright State-Lake in Ann Arbor and split contests with Pikeville (Ky.) and Goshen (Ind.) to start the year.
  • Victor Diaz (.520 batting average, two doubles, two triples, home run, five RBI, five stolen bases in five attempts) heads up a Concordia roster that is batting .297 as a unit.
  • The Concordia pitching staff holds an overall ERA of 3.07, with Timothy Pomaville (1-0, 1.29 ERA, 8 IP) and Billy Blair (2-0, 2.25 ERA, 7 IP) leading the way as the Cardinals’ main starting hands.
  • Zach Johnston (174-114) is in his sixth season at Concordia.

Additional:

Shawnee State is scheduled to play Ohio Christian on Tuesday, March 3 (2 p.m.) and Cincinnati-Clermont on Wednesday, March 4 (1 p.m.).

A preview of the two games will be coming on Monday barring a rainout.
