SSU women hold serve at No. 9 in NAIA D-I poll

The women’s basketball program at Shawnee State continued to hold a firm grip on its national standing inside the NAIA Division I Top 25 as SSU remained at No. 9 overall in the latest version of the national rankings as announced by national officials Wednesday.

Shawnee State (25-4, 12-3 Mid-South), who obtained 163 points in the latest version of the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball Poll, has maintained its No. 9 ranking for two consecutive weeks. Other than the No. 11 ranking that Shawnee State held in the NAIA Division I Preseason Poll, the Bears haven’t been outside of the top-10 during the 2019-20 season in any of the six regular season polls that have been released by the NAIA this season.

Overall, the Bears are ranked second in field goal percentage (46.8 percent), sixth in scoring offense (2,441), and seventh in scoring offense per game (84.2). Shawnee State is also ranked 10th overall in total steals (343), total defensive rebounding (plus-32.8), and scoring margin (plus-19.3).

In 2019-20, the No. 9-ranked Bears are 9-4 at the time of playing an opponent that was ranked inside the NAIAs Top 25 or receiving votes in the poll. Shawnee State only won two games against such opponents during the 2018-19 season.

Shawnee State will be honoring Sydney King and Bailey Cummins as part of its Senior Day festivities against Pikeville, with the honoring of both student-athletes and the women’s game kicking off a doubleheader that also includes the men. The contest will commence at 2 p.m.
