The men’s basketball program at Shawnee State remained as the top team receiving votes in the latest NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Poll as the Bears collected 36 points to hold its position from last’s week version of the rankings.
Shawnee State (19-10, 8-7 MSC) held its position in the rankings after a tight 63-59 loss to Cumberlands (Ky.). The Bears took a 55-54 lead late in the contest before ultimately falling.
Despite the loss, Wednesday’s inclusion in the receiving votes section of the poll means that SSU has either received votes or been ranked inside the NAIA Division I Top 25 in five of the six poll rankings during the regular season. SSU had only made an appearance in the NAIA Division I rankings once before in program history prior to this year.
Overall, the Bears lead the country in blocks (6.8), total blocks (198), and defensive field goal percentage (35.1 percent), are second in total rebound margin (plus-12.4), offensive rebounds (1,306), and sit third in rebounds per game (45) as well as fifth in scoring defense (63.97).
Shawnee State will be honoring six men’s basketball seniors as part of its Senior Day festivities against Pikeville, with the men’s game following the women’s game at approximately 4 p.m. The women’s Senior Day fesitivities and game preceds that affair at 2 p.m.
