McDERMOTT — Northwest senior Maddie ‘Mad Dog’ Montavon has signed her letter-of-intent to continue her education and join the Shawnee State University women’s swimming team following her graduation as a Mohawk this spring.
“It’s kind of crazy,” Montavon said at Friday’s signing. “I never really thought I would go anywhere with swimming when I started doing it in middle school. I just did it because my brother did it, and the opportunity kind of took off from there.”
Montavon began swimming as an eighth grader at Northwest and has competed in the 50-yard freestyle, the 100-yard freestyle, the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay during her time as a Mohawk.
In addition to her time in the pool, Montavon has also been a four-year member of the Mohawks’ girls cross country, track and field and girls soccer teams.
While she is currently undecided as to exactly what field of education she plans on studying towards, Montavon said she will likely choose a major in the education field upon enrolling at Shawnee State.
