JACKSON — A tough start against the co-champions of the Southern Hills Athletic Conference ultimately sealed the Valley Lady Indians fate in their Division III sectional semifinal, Monday at Jackson High School.

Valley’s Bre Call broke the Lady Indians’ scoreless start with one second left in the first quarter as the Lady Green Devils of North Adams used their pressure defense and length to disrupt their sectional semifinal opponent’s offensive production.

“We had to take care of the ball better; their length was just so tremendous,” Valley coach Mark Merritt said following the loss. “A few mental mistakes on overhead passes. We scouted them and knew their length was going to be big and we knew we’d have to attack which we weren’t able to do. Give credit to them, they’re a really good team.”

By game’s end, the Lady Green Devils had forced 27 Lady Indian turnovers while limiting Valley to just eight-for-34 shooting from the field (23.5%).

Valley senior Bre Call — one of eight Lady Indians in program history to score 1,000 points — led her team with 8 points in the sectional loss. Fellow seniors Brooklyn Buckle, MacKenzie Wright, Karsyn Conaway, and Nichole Gilliland also played a part in the Lady Indians’ scoring total.

“My seniors have been with me for four years, every single one of them,” Merritt said of his five seniors. “I can’t say enough about the kids they are, the character they have, and just to their overall effort.”

Their postseason journey may be over, Valley is still required to play their final Southern Ohio Conference Division II game versus Waverly after the originally scheduled contest was postponed during ‘Flu Week 2020’. This game — while still not having a confirmed makeup-date — will also be Senior Night for the five Valley seniors.
