JACKSON – While their start was promising, the Lady Trojans of Portsmouth couldn’t manage a full game’s performance in their postseason opener.

At the hands of the Albany Alexander Lady Spartans, Portsmouth’s girls basketball season came to an end with a 55-24 loss in a Division III sectional semifinal played at Jackson High School, Monday.

“I thought we defended great to start the game, just couldn’t get our shots to fall like we had hoped,” Portsmouth coach Amy Hughes said following the season-ending loss. “Credit to Alexander, they’re a good team who defended us well.”

Portsmouth started Monday’s sectional semifinal loss to Alexander trailing the Lady Spartans 9-0. After not managing a field goal until after the midway point of the first quarter, the Lady Trojans finished the period on a 6-1 run to cut their deficit to just four.

In the second, Portsmouth didn’t connect on a field goal while making three free throws — two from Hannah Hughes and one from Nia Trinadad. Hughes finished with a team-high 13 points while Trindad scored seven — including two of Portsmouth’s three-made threes.

After holding Alexander’s Marlee Grinstead to just five first half points, the Lady Spartan sophomore scored 14 of her game-high 19 in the second half. In the final sixteen minutes, Grinstead connected on six two-point field goals with a two-for-two mark at the free throw line.

Alexander outscored the Lady Trojans 29-15 in the second half to close out their 31-point win.

Following the loss, Portsmouth — still seeking their first sectional title since 2004 — will bid farewell to three seniors: Hughes, Jaiden Rickett, and Ashanti Richardson.

“With what we’ve been able to accomplish the last two years, they’re the start of something special. They’ve won 16 games in the last two years which is a big step for this program,” Coach Hughes said of her senior class. “They’re always welcome around the program to coach or play; they’re just all-around good kids.”

Portsmouth finishes the season at 8-14 (3-11 OVC) while Alexander advances to a Division III sectional final versus Williamsport Westfall, Saturday, Feb. 15 as Frankfort Adena was forced to forfeit their postseason game after the OHSAA cited the Lady Warriors played 23 regular season games.
