WHEELERSBURG — Good things came to those who waited.

Kaylee Darnell and her Wheelersburg Pirates played the waiting game for individual and team goals they were bound to achieve, it just took a couple of days longer than anticipated to get there.

After having last Thursday’s Southern Ohio Conference Division II road game at Waverly postponed, Monday’s 63-31 Senior Night home win for the Lady Pirates (19-2, 14-0 SOC II) over Eastern locked up the outright SOC II conference championship for the second straight year.

Meanwhile, Darnell scored her 1,000th career point in front of the Wheelersburg home crowd.

Darnell — needing just two points to break the 1,000 point barrier entering Monday’s game — would go on to break the mark with a steal and breakaway layup in the first quarter. The junior first team all-Southeast District guard finished with a team-high 16 points in their 32-point win.

In addition, pre-game Senior Night festivities were held for seniors Brittani Wolfenbarker and Lani Irwin.

For the Lady Pirates as a team, it’s the second-straight year they’ve won the SOC II title outright with a current 14-0 record in league play to start the final week of the season. To sweep SOC II play in one of the league’s most competitive top-to-bottom years, the Pirates will need to finish the season strong with road trips to South Webster on Thursday and Waverly next Monday.
