WEST PORTSMOUTH — It’s thought to be true that the next opportunity you play a team you’ve lost to once before, the more of a chance you have to beat them the second time around.

After their 15-point defeat at the hands of the Lady Senators (54-39) on December 16th, the Valley Lady Indians (5-14, 2-11 SOC II) traveled to West Portsmouth and took revenge versus Southern Ohio Conference Division II foe West (8-11, 3-10 SOC II), 44-41.

Valley’s defense was the ultimate driving force behind their road win over West. For the first three quarters of play, the Lady Indians held the Lady Senators to single digit scoring totals while they themselves scored 18 second quarter points to take a 25-18 halftime lead.

“Bre Call stepped up for us tonight and scored some points for us when we needed it,” Merritt said. “Our defense overall, we did a better job. A few mental mistakes with some high ball screens, but all in all just a tremendous effort.”

Call, who broke the 1,000-point mark for her career a week ago Monday, led the Lady Indians with a game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds. Karsyn Conaway broke into double-figures for Valley by scoring 13 points and grabbing six rebounds. Brooklyn Buckle was also a force on the boards by grabbing eight rebounds to go with her six points.

Morgan Rigsby scored a team-high 12 points for the Lady Senators while Abby Adkins and Charlie Jo Howard scored ten apiece.

Eden Cline’s 12 points in West’s win over Valley on December 16th were tied for a team-high. The Lady Indians held Cline scoreless in Monday’s road win.

“I thought we did a nice job defending Charlie Jo (Howard),” Merritt said. “She had five points in the first quarter, I put (Lucie) Ashkettle in and she had five points the final three quarters, give her props for that. Our bench did a good job coming in. I was impressed with Nichole (Gilliland) coming back from a concussion, she gave me some quality minutes on the floor, especially with as physical as that game was.”

Valley rounds out their regular season schedule with a home game versus Minford on Thursday, a trip to Oak Hill next Monday, and a senior night game versus Waverly before postseason play begins.

“Hopefully we get some momentum going into tournament time,” Merritt said. “We’ve got Minford next, looking forward to the challenge.”
