PORTSMOUTH – One thing is for certain – the Portsmouth Lady Trojans must be well conditioned.

Showing no signs of wear and tear while trailing the Rock Hill Redwomen by four at the half, Lady Trojans coach Amy Hughes stuck with her starting five for the entirety of Thursday’s 45-35 win in Ohio Valley Conference girls play – and for good reason.

Aside from the slow start for both teams after a 7-5 Rock Hill first quarter lead, Hughes’ group outscored the Redwomen 40-28 over the final three quarters including by a 27-13 second half margin.

“Ball control,” Hughes said as the main reason for Thursday’s win. “We were able to get the most out of our possessions while also limiting theirs.”

Indeed, 11 Lady Trojan turnovers is a single-game low for the ‘19-20 Trojans who improve to 6-11 following Thursday’s win.

In fact, two of the 11 turnovers committed by Portsmouth didn’t occur until the final minute as the Redwomen attempted a comeback.

Meaning that, for all intents and purposes, Portsmouth surrendered possession to Rock Hill just nine times – a mark most girls coaches aim to hit.

After losing all-OVC point guard Jasmine Eley to graduation following the end of last season, Portsmouth’s struggle with ball control had been a key one – until Thursday.

“Really proud of our kids,” Hughes said. “It’s one win, but the way they earned it says a lot about how hard they’ve worked to improve and keep getting better.”

Hannah Hughes scored a game-high 21 points for the Lady Trojans, her eighth time passing the 20 point plateau in a game this season. Nia Trinadad scored a season-high 12 points for Portsmouth on four-made threes, three of which came in the second half as the Lady Trojans made their run.

Senior Jaiden Rickett scored nine points and grabbed eight rebounds while senior Ashanti Richardson scored two points and grabbed seven rebounds. Freshman Skilyn Robinson scored one point and grabbed eight rebounds.

A Portsmouth win over Rock Hill means a season-sweep over the Redwomen when including their 39-30 win in Pedro on December 12th.

Hughes’ Lady Trojans will prepare to host Zane Trace (2-15) this Saturday with J.V. tip scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
