WHEELERSBURG – Monday can’t come soon enough for the Wheelersburg Pirates boys basketball team.

After receiving the No. 1 ranking nod in Division III in Monday’s AP poll, the Pirates (8-2) dropped two out of three games in a five-day span, including Saturday’s 56-47 home loss to the Ironton Fighting Tigers (5-4).

Wheelersburg never led in their nine-point loss Saturday and were only tied with the Fighting Tigers on two occasions: 2-2 and 20-20, both in the first half.

The closest the Pirates would cut into the Ironton’s lead in the second half was at 47-45 when Aaron Jolly’s three brought them to within two.

Over the final five minutes, Ironton would outscore Wheelersburg 10-2 to pick up their fourth straight win.

Ironton’s Jordan Grizzle led all scorers with 14 points. Gage Salyers finished with 12 for the Fighting Tigers, Trent Hacker scored 11, Reid Carrico scored 10, Trent Milleson seven, and Collin Freeman scored two.

For the Pirates, J.J. Truitt scored 10, Carter McCorkle, Kenny Sanderlin, and Eli Swords scored eight apiece, Matthew Miller scored six, Gage Adkins four, and Aaron Jolly scored three.

A new week for the Pirates begins Tuesday as Wheelersburg will travel to South Webster to continue SOC II play.
