Another home victory for the Notre Dame Lady Titans meant another sectional championship for head coach Kelsey Glockner’s squad as they defeated the Valley Indians in straight sets (25-12, 25-10, 25-11) to clinch their spot in the district semifinals next week in Jackson.
“We had a chance to go see Valley, and they’re a very athletic team” said Glockner following her team’s win Thursday night, “One thing that I really like about them is that I feel like they’re comfortable. I feel like they really enjoy being out there and there’s no bad attitudes from anyone out there. It’s definitely a team that when everything’s going good for, you can’t count them out. We just knew we had to be really focused to be able to take them down tonight. The girls did a great job of that again tonight.”
The Lady Titans certainly seemed focused in pregame warmups, which transferred seamlessly into the first set as they opened the match by scoring the first seven points of the set, forcing a Valley timeout. Notre Dame would go on to win what would be the closest set of the night by a score of 25-12, setting the tone for how they had prepared leading up to their first postseason game Thursday night.
The hot start for Notre Dame was no flash in the pan as they Lady Titans went on a 10-2 run to start the second set before forcing another Lady Indians timeout. In what would be the widest set margin of victory on the night, Notre Dame proceeded to score 15 of the next 23 set points to win the second set 25-10 and extend their match lead heading into the final set of the night at 2-0.
In the third and final set of the night, the Lady Titans continued on their tear by scoring eight of the first nine set points before extending that lead to the eventual margin of victory at 25-11.
Leading Notre Dame in kills were senior hitters Katie Dettwiller and Clara Hash with 19 and 12 respectively. From the service line, libero Joyce Zheng led the team with 5 aces while Hash had 3 as well. Setter Cassie Schaefer led the Lady Titans in assists with a total of 31 in all three sets and an average of 10.3 assists per set.
Notre Dame advances to the district semifinals of the Division IV Jackson 2 district where they will meet the Trimble Tomcats for a spot in the district championship where, if they win, they would meet the winner of Waterford and Paint Valley to advance to the regional tournament in Lancaster.
“That conference is always a good conference” said Glockner when discussing her team’s upcoming semifinal matchup, “Usually we face at least two teams from that conference in the past couple of years at Jackson. It’s always super exciting making it to Jackson. We’re looking forward to the matchup, we have our work cut out for us if we want to keep progressing.”
The Lady Titans and the Lady Tomcats will square off on Thursday October 25th 30 minutes following the conclusion of the match between Waterford and Paint Valley at Jackson High School.
