On Tuesday and Wednesday, Portsmouth High School and Shawnee State University hosted one of the sectionals for the Southeast district of girls’ tennis to determine who would advance to Athens next week for district competition. The top six finishers in each of the singles and doubles tournaments would advance to the district tournaments where there, the top two finishers in singles and doubles competition will advance to the state tournament the following week.
In the championship round of the singles tournament, Sylvia Gray of Unioto High School defeated Wheelersburg’s Lea Wright in straight sets (6-0, 6-0). Last Saturday, Wright won the SOC singles title and was named SOC player of the year for the third straight season. Allie Entler of Waverly, who Wright defeated in the SOC championship a week ago, placed fourth in the sectionals, good enough to advance to next week’s district competition. Portsmouth High School’s Avery Wolfe also will be advancing to next week’s district competition after placing fifth at the sectionals. Rounding out the top six was Washington Court House’s Megan Downing who finished third and Jackson’s Mackenzie Humphreys who finished sixth.
In the doubles competition, Wheelersburg’s team of Maddie Gill and Kaitlyn Sommer defeated Keller Clouse and Maci Garrett of Logan Elm in straight sets (6-0, 6-2) to clinch the top seed heading into next week’s district competition. Gill and Sommer also won last weekend’s SOC doubles title to add to their sectional victory on Wednesday. Valley’s Hannah Conley and Shalyn Baker placed fifth in the doubles competition, good enough to advance to district play next week. Conley and Baker fell to Gill and Sommer last Saturday in the SOC championship match. Rounding out the top six are Sydnie Hall and Bethanie Wilt of Washington Court House who finished third, Makayla McDaniel and Kara Lutz of Logan Elm who finished fourth, and Emma Shaw and Kara Hinton of Circleville who finished sixth.
Ohio University in Athens will host next week’s district competition on Wednesday October 10th beginning at 10 a.m. The six winners from the Southeast sectional for singles and doubles competition will be joined by the top two finishers in each competition from the East sectional. The top two in each competition in next week’s district tournaments will then qualify for state competition at the Linder Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio on October 19th-20th.
