Shawnee State would prove to be a tough out throughout the duration of the contest, however. After falling behind by a 6-2 deficit to the Patriots, the Bears would go on a 7-1 tilt off of a trio of kills by Galbrath, Shelton, and Miranda Clark to obtain a 9-7 lead before St. Catharine would go back in front on a 5-0 spurt of its own off of three kills by Jessie Stone.
The Bears, however, would not go quietly, clawing right back into the set with a 5-2 run off of a trio of kills by Galbrath to tie the score at 14 apiece.
Both teams would trade scores over the next trio of volleys before Stone came up big again for the Patriots with another trio of spikes to put St. Catharine within two points of finalizing the set as the Patriots held a 23-17 edge off of a 6-1 spurt.
As with the prior pair of scenarios, Shawnee State would go on yet another march as the Bears used a 6-0 spurt off of two kills by Galbrath to tie the set at 23-all.
However, the rally would come up just shy for Shawnee State as St. Catharine scored the final two points of the set via a Jordan Strickland spike and an attack error to obtain the game’s first set.
The Bears started out the second set on a roll as Shawnee State immediately got its offensive attack involved by obtaining two kills from Galbrath and a kill each from Shelton and Lauren Helbig en route to a 7-2 advantage to start the match’s second set.
Unfortunately for the Bears, the edge wouldn’t last for long as St. Catharine would methodically work its way back into the second frame of play.
Even though Galbrath, Shelton, and Brittany Mounts would obtain kills to keep the Patriot attack at bay, St. Catharine would eventually use four kills by Rebecca Just and a duo of kills from three other Patriots to go on a 16-8 tilt and obtain a 19-15 edge in the process.
From that point forward, Shawnee State would not be able to get closer than two points as the Bears were met with two additional spikes by St. Catharine’s Roni Pollard, and as a result, the Patriots would take the second tilt of action by a 25-21 tally.
Shawnee State and St. Catharine would match each other point-for-point at the start of the third set before the Bears would turn a small 4-3 deficit into a sizeable 9-4 advantage off of two service aces by Rhyanna Day as well as a Clark spike.
The Patriots, however, would grab the momentum back after a timeout, as St. Catharine regrouped and would grab kills from four different Patriots in taking a 13-12 advantage.
Both teams would then trade off on separate spurts, as two combined kills from Huesing and Clark gave Shawnee State a 15-13 advantage before St. Catharine answered with a 4-0 spurt of its own off of a trio of kills from Mikaela Beck to push the score to a 17-15 count.
From there, the Bears would cut the lead down to a two-point edge three separate times, as two Shelton kills and a Huesing service ace, along with an attack error by the Patriots, put Shawnee State within distance to take control.
However, the St. Catharine offensive attack would regroup, and as a result, the Patriots would claim four of the final six volleys – via kills from three different St. Catharine players – in taking the third set as well as the match, also by a 25-21 score.
As far as the upcoming slate is concerned, the Bears will obtain three days of rest before Shawnee State plays rival Rio Grande for the third and final time this season in Rio Grande.
The Bears, who took each of the previous two matches against the RedStorm this season in straight sets, will take on Rio Grande at the Newt Oliver Arena on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m.
