Shawnee State’s Levi Jones (JR/Millersburg, Ohio) was named First Team All-Mid-South Conference, while 11 additional players, including 2014 West graduate Brady Knittel and South Shore, Ky. native JT Boggs, were named as All-Academic MSC honorees at the MSC Baseball Banquet on Wednesday night.

Jones has had a stellar first season at Shawnee State as the outfielder is hitting .355 with nine doubles, two triples and 19 RBI in his first 41 games in an SSU uniform. Jones has an on-base percentage of .423, and is slugging .449. Jones is ninth in the Mid-South Conference in batting average and has also only committed two errors in right field in 75 chances, which has resulted in a .973 fielding percentage.

In addition to Knittel and Boggs, the SSU baseball program put Casey Claflin (SR/Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio), Austyn Goodwin (SR/Lexington, Ky.), Christian Helton (JR/Lexington, Ky.), Alex Medina (JR/Miami, Fla.), Anthony Nichols (JR/Fargo, N.D.), Dalton Phillips (JR/Hastings, Mich.), Dillon Ritter (JR/O’Fallon, Ill.), Chase Thurber (JR/Andover, Ohio) and Kasey Wright (JR/Hawesville, Ky.) on the All-Academic list for the 2018 season. To be eligible, student-athletes must have been at least a sophomore in their third semester at the institution or a transfer, and have maintained a 3.25 cumulative GPA. The 11 named is one more than the 2017 season, when 10 Bears were awarded the Mid-South Conference’s academic award.

SSU baseball falls to Campbellsville, 11-5, in Mid-South Conference Tournament Opening Round, falls to consolation bracket

The Shawnee State baseball program dropped its first game of the Mid-South Conference Tournament to Campbellsville on Thursday afternoon, losing to the second-seeded Tigers 11-5.

After falling behind by a 4-0 tally to start the affair, Shawnee State responded with two runs in the top of the fourth. Seth Clement led off the frame with an infield single on a chopper toward second base. With one out, Levi Jones doubled into right-center field, which moved Clement to third. Chase Thurber then lined an RBI double down the left field line, scoring both runners to cut the Campbellsville lead to 4-2.

Campbellsville, however, got the two runs back in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Shane Stober singled to right-center field, and Valdez followed with a double to left-center, with pinch runner Jalen Horton scoring on the play to make the score 5-2. Solis then added an RBI single to right field to extend the Tiger lead back to 6-2 after four innings.

The Bears again rallied for a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Boggs lined a single to center field to lead off the inning, and with one out, Thurber singled to right field to put two men on. Dalton Phillips then lifted a bloop single to left field, which loaded the bases with one out. Sam Gerhold followed with a sacrifice fly to center, driving in Boggs and moving Thurber to third, and Casey Claflin lined a double to left center, driving in Thurber to cut the Campbellsville lead to 6-4. Five runs by the Tigers in the bottom of the sixth frame, however, sealed Shawnee State’s fate.

Anthony Arias got the win for Campbellsville, allowing two runs on six hits in five innings pitched while striking out four. Kyle Wisniewski (FR/Strongsville, Ohio) took the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits in four innings pitched.

The loss drops Shawnee State to 14-29 on the season. Campbellsville improves to 33-15, and moves into the winner’s bracket in the Mid-South Conference Tournament.

Shawnee State will play on Friday against the loser of either No. 3 Cumberland (Tenn.) or No. 6 Pikeville. First pitch on Friday is set for 9 a.m.
