Titans fall to Oaks

PORTSMOUTH — The Titans entered Saturday with a lot of momentum after reeling off three straight victories. However, Notre Dame couldn’t find any momentum on a night where Oak Hill dominated the time of possession, attempting 51 runs, on it’s way to a 26-6 victory over the hometown team at Spartan Stadium.

“We got handled on both sides of the ball,” Titans head coach Bob Ashley said.

Notre Dame (3-2, 1-1) battled field position as much as it battled the Oaks in the first half. Four of the five Titan drives in the first 24 minutes of play began inside their 10-yard line and two of the drives began inside the 5-yard line.

As a result, Notre Dame only managed two first downs in the first half — one via defensive penalty. For the game, the Titans only gained 165 yards while turning the ball over twice.

“We just need to get back to fundamentals,” Ashley said. “The lack of fundamentals is what led to a lot of the break downs out there. But you’ve got to give Oak Hill a lot of credit. They’re extremely well coached. Their kids played extremely well.”

Despite the lack of offensive production, the Titans only gave up 14 points in the first half. The Notre Dame defense stopped the Oaks twice on fourth down, keeping the hometown team in the game.

“Defensively, we gave a better effort,” Ashley said. “But we put our defense on the field way too long. We just couldn’t move the chains offensively. We couldn’t give our defense a break.”

In the fourth quarter, Sam Kayser broke the shutout by scoring a 69-yard touchdown run. Ashley admitted he was pleased with his team’s effort throughout the night, it was just a matter of making the proper adjustments before the Titans travel to Green Friday.

“We’ve got to go back, watch the film, figure out what went wrong and try to get better,”Ashley said.
