WHEELERSBURG — Over the years, the Southern Ohio Conference has proven to be ultra competitive in the sport of golf, especially at the Division II level.
On Tuesday evening, that factoid was no different as each of the top five finishing schools in the SOC II Preview were separated by just 45 strokes from each other, with second through fifth place being decided by a mere 25 strokes.
At the end of the day, however, a season-best effort from Wheelersburg, along with solid efforts from West, Minford, Northwest, and Valley weren’t enough to topple Waverly as the Tigers took home the first SOC II Preview of the season at Little Scioto Golf Course in Wheelersburg.
The Pirates, who shot a county-best 187, were led by Trevin Mault and Jaydren Guthrie, who each collected scores of 44 en route to tying for a fourth place finish in the SOC I Preview. Carson McCorkle finished just two strokes back of his teammates en route to a seventh place showing overall, while Tanner Stevenson rounded out ‘Burg’s strong overall performance with his 53.
Behind Wheelersburg, West and Minford each duked it out for third place throughout the entirety of the SOC I Preview, with both programs ultimately having to settle for a tie for the spot after each program collected an overall score of 205.
Minford’s Zac Hammond shot a 45 to pace the way while teammates Zeb Simpson, Sawyer Grashel, and Matt Koverman followed with scores of 51, 53, and 57, respectively. West, meanwhile, saw its No. 1 through No. 4 scorers finish within seven strokes of each other as Mitchell Malnar’s 48, 51s by Dustin Sowards and Ethan Daniel, and a 55 by Eli Adkins set the table for the Senators.
Just seven strokes back of the Falcons and Senators came Northwest, who followed Minford and West up by shooting an overall score of 212. Nick Golland’s 45 allowed the senior to tie Hammond for sixth place in the overall finishing order, while Eli Dunn collected a 50 to follow suit. Valley’s Andy Kuhn and Jared Morrow led the Indians’ efforts with a 54 and a 58 as the Indians collected a 242 on the evening.
Waverly, who shot a 167 as a team, collected the first SOC II Preview of the season by 20 strokes over Wheelersburg. The Tigers’ Conner Heffner, Talon Osborne, and Eric Heffner accumulated scores of 37, 39, and 42 en route to finishing in the first through third positions overall while Cole Robertson put together a 49 to round out the winning effort.
