Over the first week of the 2017 season, Wheelersburg’s Trevin Mault and Portsmouth’s William Sturgill have proven themselves as dependable No. 1 golfers on their respective units.

On Thursday evening, the pair proved their worth against some of the best competition that one can find across the region as Mault and Sturgill, who each collected scores of 82 en route to tying for 12th in a 76-player field at the Elks Country Club as part of the Portsmouth Invitational that was held on Thursday afternoon.

Sturgill and Mault, who have been the leading scorers in every match this season for the Trojans and the Pirates, respectively, showcased their skills as Sturgill’s 40 on the back nine holes put the upperclassman in a tie for seventh place concerning the backside while Mault 39 on the front nine put the young freshman in a tie for third place as far as the frontside was concerned.

Clay, who again put together a consistent effort across its lineup, was the highest scoring team from Scioto County as the Panthers tied for 11th out of 16 schools and came within one stroke of tying for a 10th-place finish.

Clay was again led by Caleb Cline and Hunter Armstrong, who put together a 95 and a 96, respectively, to head the charge, while Tyler Phillips added identical scores of 49 on the front and back nine to collect a 98. Tyler Hobbs’ 45 on the back nine allowed the junior to grab a 102 en route to the final scoring position, and Teddy McCall’s 104 meant that each of the first five Panther participants were separated by just nine strokes.

Wheelersburg, who finished in 14th position, had Carson McCorkle, Tanner Stevenson, and Jaydren Guthrie join Mault on the scoresheet. McCorkle used a 96 to finish in the runner-up slot while Guthrie and Stevenson collected 109s for the Pirates. Katy Pertuset’s 101 and Aiden Donges’ 116 rounded out the Portsmouth list.

West Union’s A squad, which consisted of Portsmouth Invitational Medalist Elijah McCarty (73), took home top honors with a team score of 324. Waverly and Piketon, who both finished in the top five overall, shot 336 and 348, respectively, to finish second and fourth. The Tigers’ Talon Osborne (76) and Conner Heffner (78), along with the Redstreaks’ Denzel Endicott (81) were among the standouts.
