In the sport of golf, it takes clear focus and concentration to put together a series of strong rounds.

Portsmouth golfing hand William Sturgill put together a strong effort to begin the 2017 season as his round of 83 at the Ironton Invitational allowed Sturgill to tie for fifth place in the overall standings en route to the Ironton Invitational’s All-Tournament Team list.

Sturgill, who tied Coal Grove’s Jed Whitworth for fifth place with his 83, finished behind Fairland’s Clayton Thomas (82), Rock Hill’s Logan Reed (82), Gallia Academy’s Kaden Thomas (77), and Coal Grove’s Trevor Deere, who was the tournament’s overall medalist with his score of 76.

Portsmouth, who didn’t compete as a team in the invitational due to not having the minimum of four players, also put Katy Pertuset (93) and Aiden Donges (115) on the scorecard. Pertuset recorded the lowest round of the three girls who took part in the Ironton Invitational.

Behind its performances from Deere and Whitworth, Coal Grove won the overall team title with a overall score of 336. Fairland, Rock Hill, and Chesapeake followed as the trio were separated by just a dozen strokes from second to fourth.

Del Rice League winding down

With the summer coming to a close, the Del Rice League is also winding its season schedule down as summer nears its end. From the competitive play in the league, however, one couldn’t tell.

Wednesday, July 26 — Shope vs. Andy Glockner’s (Glockner’s won 10-8)

For Shope, Justin Craft led the way with two hits, including a home run. Lonnie Craft added an additional pair of hits to go along with three RBI in the contest. Glockner’s did not report stats during the contest.

Saturday, July 29 — Shope vs. SOMC (Shope won 9-3)

Behind six hits, Shope was able to rebound with a 9-3 victory over SOMC. Justin Craft struck out seven en route to the win. For SOMC, Jason Armes, Chase Bass, David Bentley, Drew Nichol, Bob Ratcliff, and Jason Woods all collected one hit — with Nichol and Ratcliff combining to drive in three runs — while Darrell Stapleton drew a pair of walks.

The Del Rice League playoffs were scheduled to commence on August 19 and 20, but have been pushed back to August 26 and 27 due to previously scheduled conflicts.
