The Shawnee State men’s and women’s cross country programs, along with the men’s tennis program and the men’s and women’s golf programs, have officially released their schedule updates for the 2017 campaign. In all, the Bears will be making appearances in Kentucky, Michigan, New York, and West Virginia in addition to the home state of Ohio between the three sports.
Shawnee State’s cross country programs, with an eye on repeating as Mid-South Conference champions and return to the NAIA National Championships, will take on another challenging slate in 2017.
Both the men and women will start the 2017 season on Sept. 8, when both teams participate in the Mid-South Conference Preview Meet in Bowling Green, Ky. The next week, both teams will run at the Iona College Meet of Champions, held annually in Bronx, N.Y. After the meet in the Bronx, Shawnee State will compete closer to home by running in the Friendship Invitational at Cedarville University on Sept. 16 and in the Patty Forgey Invitational at Rio Grande on Sept. 22.
SSU will also participate in the All-Ohio Championships on Sept. 29, and both teams are scheduled to participate in the Greater Louisville Classic the following day. The two squads will then participate in the Jenna Strong Invitational at Wilmington College on Oct. 13 and will wrap up the regular season at the Great Lakes Invitational in Grand Rapids, Mich. on Oct. 21.
The postseason will begin for Shawnee State on Nov. 4 at the Mid-South Conference Championships in Bowling Green, Kentucky. If the Bears win the Mid-South Championships, the teams will then be set to go to Vancouver, Washington for the NAIA National Championships on Nov. 18.
The Shawnee State tennis program will start the fall off with a trip to Columbus to take on Capital University on Sept. 13, followed by a road match at Mount Saint Joseph in Cincinnati on Sept. 18. Shawnee State will then play three matches at Ohio Christian University the weekend of Sept. 22 and 23, with the Bears set to take on Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio), Ohio Christian, and Saint Francis (Ind.).
Shawnee State’s lone home match of the fall will be a men’s match against Otterbein University (Ohio), a member of NCAA Division III ranks, on Oct. 2. Shawnee State’s women will not play a home match this fall.
The men’s and women’s golf season will start on Sunday, Aug. 27 when both the men and women will participate in the Ohio Christian Invitational at Cooks Creek Golf Club in Ashville. Two weekends later, both teams will travel to Grayson, Ky. to play in the Kentucky Christian Invitational at Hidden Cove Golf Course.
The 2017 Mid-South Conference Fall Tournament will be hosted by Georgetown College (Ky.) this season, and will be held Sept. 18-19 at Cherry Blossom Golf Club. Following that, Shawnee State’s men will play in the West Virginia Tech Fall Invitational on Oct. 2-3, with the tournament to be played at the Cobb Course at Glade Springs Resort in Daniels, W. Va.
Shawnee State’s home invitational will wrap up SSU’s fall schedule as the Bears are set to host the annual tournament at Elks Country Club on Oct. 15-16. Shawnee State’s Dagan Abdon was the individual champion at last season’s home invitational and will look to defend his title at this year’s tournament.
