VIENNA, W. Va. – The Shawnee State women’s soccer team used a hat trick and an assist from Maddie Woodard, along with two goals by Schuyler Jones, to record its first win of the season by a 8-0 tally over Ohio Valley University on Saturday afternoon.
The Bears’ offensive attack got going early and often, amassing an amazing 30 shots, with 21 of them coming on goal. Meanwhile, the stout Bear defense held the Fighting Scots to just seven shots, with only a trio of them coming on goal.
Both teams would go scoreless through the first seven minutes of the contest before Woodard opened the floodgates on an assist from Kyla Toles (who recorded the first assist of her career) at the 7:15 mark, putting the Bears up by a 1-0 count.
Seven minutes later, Jones broke through on a dish from Heather Hencye in the 14th minute to score her 80th and 81st career points and put Shawnee State up by a 2-0 tally. Nine more minutes would come and go without a goal before Woodard broke the mini-drought off a pass from fellow sophomore Jenny Campbell to extend the Bears’ lead to a 3-0 advantage.
Over the following 10 minutes, Shawnee State would extend the gap by not one, but two goals. Leslie Marsh got into the scoring act off another assist from Campbell in the 28th minute. Five minutes later, Jones matched Woodard with her second goal of the game to extend to the deficit to a 5-0 advantage.
In the second half, Woodard continued on her torrid pace in the 56th minute by completing her hat trick off of a pass by Adrianna Johnson, who (like Toles) recorded her first career assist. Campbell followed by scoring her first goal of the year off of assists by Marsh and Toles in the 69th minute. Toles then capped off her second collegiate game with her first career goal off of another assist from Hencye to cap the game’s scoring.
For Shawnee State, a total of four players had at least four or more points on the afternoon. Woodard led the way by grabbing seven points while Jones, Campbell, and Toles accumulated four points apiece. Marsh and Hencye also recorded multiple points on the day, with three and two, respectively.
In addition to the victory for the Bears, Michaela Garner obtained her second shutout in as many days, recording three saves over the duration of the contest.
On the quick road swing, the Bears went 1-0-1 to start the year. Shawnee State will be back in action in two weeks as the Bears will host their home opener against Union College on the Shawnee Turf.
SSU men fall to SCAD — The Shawnee State men’s soccer team was only able to muster three shots on goal and six shots overall as the Bears felly a 3-0 tally against the No. 21 SCAD Savannah on Saturday afternoon at Milligan College.
Jordan Trinci-Lyne wasted no time in getting the contest started for SCAD Savannah as the forward cleared the path with his path to a streaking Johan Renli, allowing the Bees to take a 1-0 lead with less than a half-minute gone in the game.
Both teams would play stout defensively over the following 11 minutes until Nick Dowdell gave himself an opportunity to put in the equalizer with 12:14 gone in the contest. However, Dowdell’s shot on goal was not to be as it was saved by Fernando Zeledon in the box to keep the deficit at 1-0.
The bout went without another shot for nearly seven more minutes before SCAD Savannah began to find the creases. For the remainder of the half, Shawnee State was outshot 7-2 and a goal by Alex Jamroz via a Torin Melville dime in the 41st minute allowed the Bees to obtain a 2-0 halftime advantage.
In the second half, the Bears stepped it up defensively and held SCAD Savannah to a near-deadlock, with the Shawnee State backline holding firm. When the Bees were able to find openings in the Bears’ defense, Brandon Pfeiffer responded with four saves in a 21-minute span, including three saves in a four-minute flurry, to keep Shawnee State within striking distance.
Trinci-Lyne, however, would not be denied, as the senior took the receiving end of a Alejandro Rodrigez Gil pass and scored in the 80th minute to put the game out of reach for the Bears.
Overall, Shawnee State finished with six shots and three shots on goal compared to SCAD Savannah’s 15 and eight, respectively. Pfeiffer took the loss with three goals allowed but recorded five stops, including four in the second half.
Dowdell led the Bears’ offensive attack with two shots, with both coming on goal. Mauricio Solis recorded his lone shot on goal in the 44th minute, and Caspar Nolte, along with Cody Hartong, recorded two shots and one shot for Shawnee State.
The Bears next contest will be on Tuesday, August 25 as Shawnee State will open up its home slate against Indiana Institute of Technology, with a start time set for 4:00 p.m. at the Shawnee Turf.
