PORTSMOUTH – The Shawnee State men’s basketball team has added 6-foot-6 post player Mason Powell for the 2015-16 season, head coach Jeff Hamilton announced Wednesday.

“We are very excited to add Mason into our program,” Hamilton said. “He has great upside with his size and athleticism. He gives us some added depth in the post and we expect him to contribute immediately.”

A Grant, Mich., native, Powell led Grant High School to a Class B District runner-up finish during his senior campaign, where he averaged 9.7 points and 8.2 rebounds per contest, each top five in the Central State Conference. The Tigers finished with a 16-7 overall record.

During that senior campaign, Powell received First-Team All-Conference honors, as well as First-Team All-Area accolades.

Powell adds depth to an SSU frontcourt which returns four players who received significant minutes last season. Ethan Moffatt led the way with 6.6 points per game, while Nick Tingle averaged 6.1. Jacob Daniels returns after averaging a team-high 4.72 rebounds per game last year.

While at Grant, Powell finished fourth in the conference in scoring, second in rebounds and second in blocks per game – tallying 1.7. He was coached by Josh Delamater.

“He is fantastic young man who will fit in with our team very well,” Hamilton said. “He has a very bright future as a Bear.”
