The Waverly Post 142 Shockers got their 2017 baseball campaign off on the right foot as Post 142 pounded Chillicothe Post 757, 8-2, in the season-opener for the pair at Chillicothe on Thursday evening.
Wheelersburg’s Xander Carmichael led the way for the Shockers by going 2-for-3 with a triple, a double, and three RBI on the evening, while Minford’s Luke Lindamood joined Carmichael in the multi-hit department by going 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI in the victory. Valley’s Tanner Cunningham was also plenty impressive throughout the day during his 1-for-3 day that resulted in a RBI.
“This was a nice league win for us,” Waverly Post 142 head coach Jonathan Teeters said. “Anytime you can go on the road and get a league win, it’s a successful day.”
Waverly’s Clayton Howell, who was the ace of the Tigers’ pitching staff all season long, threw four and two-thirds innings of four-hit baseball while striking out six and walking only three for a 2-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Garrett Moore went the final two and a third innings and struck out a batter while only allowing two hits on the evening.
“Clayton really looked good out there for his first outing,” Teeters said. “He pounded the zone and our defense played well behind him. Bullet came in and shut the gas off to seal it up.”
Jake Reed (2-for-4, double, RBI), Braden Simms (2-for-4, RBI), and Howell (1-for-4, RBI), were among the additional contributors for the Shockers on the evening as Post 142 moved to 1-0 on the year. Post 757 fell to 0-1.
Waverly Post 142 will travel to Athens on Saturday for a doubleheader against Athens Post 21. The first affair is scheduled for 11 a.m.
