CHILLICOTHE – The Wheelersburg Lady Pirates continued their postseason romp in Division III Southeast District action by obtaining an 11-0 mercy-rule victory over the Zane Trace Lady Pioneers on Wednesday afternoon at Unioto High School.

From the get-go, Wheelersburg wasted no time in putting runs on the board.

In the opening inning, Taylor Fannin singled, stole second base and advanced to third on an infield error, and the next batter, Kasey Bergan, walked. Bre Klaiber drove in both runners with a double to left-center field, scampered to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Faith Howard sacrifice fly ball to left field to give the Lady Pirates a 3-0 lead after an inning of play.

Wheelersburg added a run in the second inning as Christen Risner reached on a fielder’s choice, stole a base, and advanced on a wild pitch before scoring on a wild pitch from Destiny Hitchens. Another run was added in the third when Bergan crushed a solo home run over the left field fence to give Wheelersburg a 5-0 lead.

In the fourth frame, Taylor McQuay led off with a single, while Risner drew a walk. The next batter, Kallie Coleman cleared the bases with a two-RBI triple and later scored on a fielder’s choice from Fannin. With Klaiber at the plate and two gone, the senior reached on a fielder’s choice, and Howard followed by drawing a walk. Klaiber scored on a Sarah Claxon double and Brittany Swim drove in Howard and Claxon to push the margin to its 11-0 tally.

Swim finished 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI’s on the day. Claxon was 2-for-3 and scored a run. Bergan was 1-for-1 with a RBI and scored twice.

Howard and the Wheelersburg defense were just as impressive in the field as the Wheelersburg offense was at the dish. Howard went all five innings, shutting out the Lady Pioneers allowing just three hits and striking out seven. Howard did not allow a hit after the second inning. The only person to reach base safely was when Evie Bennett was hit by a pitch.

This season marked the fourth year in a row that Wheelersburg has reached a Division III district title affair. In 2016, Wheelersburg defeated Valley to win a D-III district title. In 2015, the Lady Pirates shutout Meigs to take home a district crown. The prior year, the Lady Pirates beat Zane Trace to advance to the regional round. They’ll take on Sardinia Eastern on Saturday at Unioto at 11 a.m. in the Division III, Chillicothe I District Championship Game.
