The Shawnee State softball program got its season started with a pair of wins on Monday, defeating St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ill.) 7-4, and downing Penn State-Hazleton 6-0 to start the Cocoa Beach Spring Training Tournament.
The Bears would score five runs in the second inning in the first contest, and added a run in the sixth inning to take a 6-0 lead on St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Shawnee State scored its seventh run in the fifth inning before the Pomeroys scored two runs in the sixth and seventh inning off of SSU starter Brooke Blevins. Blevins, however, stopped the bleeding and held on for the complete game win.
In the second game against Penn State-Hazleton, McKenzie Whittaker and Miranda Pauley combined to shut out Penn State-Hazleton. Whittaker allowed just two hits and two walks over six innings, while Pauley pitched a perfect seventh frame to close out the affair. Victoria Bevington and Marisa Brown recorded two RBIs apiece to pace the Bears’ offense, as Shawnee State scored six runs in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach.
With the wins, Shawnee State starts the year with a 2-0 record. St. Mary-of-the-Woods fell to 3-1, and Penn State-Hazleton is 1-3 on the year.
Shawnee State continues the Cocoa Beach Spring Training Tournament on Tuesday afternoon with games against Bloomfield College (N.J.) and Morrisville State (N.Y.). The first pitch of the first contest will be at 1 p.m., with the second game following immediately after at 3:30 p.m.
