The Notre Dame Lady Titans took down the Federal Hocking Lady Lancers 48-30 in District Semi-Finals Thursday night at Jackson High School.
“We knew they were a solid team, they played pretty hard, we were prepared for their defense” said Notre Dame Coach J.D. McKinzie. “The first quarter we got off to a pretty good start, then offensively we turned the ball over a little in the second quarter and didn’t get as many shots the as we did in the first quarter. We made some adjustments during half time, and tried to get a shot a possession, and we did.”
“We expected a lot of size, and we weren’t disappointed because they’re big” state Federal Hocking Coach Jeremy Tolson. “They are as advertised, they’re a very good team. There’s a reason they are 22-1.” Tolson continued “I thought for our lack of size we did battel, but they just killed us on the glass, and we just couldn’t hit any shot. When you’ve got your three shooters struggling from outside it really puts a damper on the day.”
Sophomore Katie Detwiller lead the Lady Titans in scoring with 18, followed by Junior Lexi Smith who added ten and Molly Hoover who contributed eight in the win.
“Molly Hoover had eight assists tonight, she did a real good job attacking the paint tonight” Titan Coach McKinzie said. “Katie Detwiller played very well for us today inside she led us in scoring with 18, and Lexi did a good job. Defensively we played very well.”
“But they (Federal Hocking) was face guarding Hagen Schaefer all night, and she told the team during her first time out to not worry about getting the ball to her to just do their thing and get it to the bigs and let them finish,” continued McKinzie. “And our bigs did just what she asked, they did well in the paint. Hagen has led us in scoring all year, this is the first game she hasn’t scored in the double digits all year, but she didn’t try to force it and I’m proud of her for that, nobody tried to force anything to her and everyone else stepped up.”
Senior Destiny Tabler scored 12 for the Lady Lancers in the loss. Followed by Junior Hannah Dunfee with ten.
“We wanted to shut down their lead scorer, and we did that. I thought Hannah Dunfee did a great job on her, and she typically does play good defense, she gives a lot of girls fits.” said Lady Lancer Coach Tolson. “They just killed us on the glass. We missed a lot of second chance points, but we played good defense on the perimeter.
My team is typically a hustling team, and they play very hard, and I’m proud of my girls, they played very hard” continued Tolson. “This is a program that went from 5 wins a couple years ago and now they’re sectional champs and they are playing in the district semifinals. This program, in my opinion, is on the way up. We can hold our heads high.”
“Proud of the girls” said Coach McKinzie, “This is our second year getting back to the District finals, and we’re excited. We will be ready for whoever we face next Tuesday.”
