It was a victorious Thursday night for the New Boston Lady Tigers, who defeated the East Tartans 51-37 at home.
New Boston Head Coach Kayla Wiley explained that she knew it was going to be a tough game going in, so the girls practiced hard.
“They’re a good team. They play hard and are coached well,” she stated. “We were counting on our transition defense to get better, and it did. It was a very well played game by both teams.”
“They’re a good team,” East Head Coach Walt Monroe commented about the Tigers.
He added that is was a difficult game for the Tartans, who were not at their best.
“Our kids have been sick all week,” Monroe added.
Leading New Boston was Ali Hamilton with 14 points. She also added five blocks and 19 rebounds.
Other contributing players were Sammy Oiler with 12 points, Kaylee Stone who made 10 points, Mariah Buckley with eight and four assists and Lexus Oiler who made six points.
Wiley explained that Hamilton is a third year varsity player that many teams double and triple team.
“She’s definitely one of my leaders. And, she’s a good defensive player as well,” Wiley commented.
The coach also added that Buckley set a good temp during the game and also with Stone played good defense by guarding East’s best players.
East was led by Petyon Helphinstine with 11 points. Monroe stated that the Tartans are usually led by both Helphinstine and Shay Brown, who scored eight points during the game.
The Tigers, now 12-3 overall, have another big game coming up as they play South Point on Saturday.
“I’m expecting an up and down transition game that hopefully we win,” said Wiley.
East will go on to play Rose Hill at home on Monday.
Monroe stated that he knows little about Rose Hill but is hopeful.
“We play good at home,” he said.
