The Waverly Lady Tigers went to battle against the South Webster Jeeps in a close game tha took the Tigers into overtime to win. After an aggressive game, Waverly won 58-52. Waverly outscored the Jeeps in the first and second periods of the game, but the Jeeps came back stronger after the half, catching the Tigers and ending the fourth with a tied 47-47. Waverly scored 11 points in overtime but only gave away five, sealing the fate of South Webster.
“This was a big team road win for us tonight. We had players step up and give us great minutes when their number was called upon,” stated Waverly Head Coach John Bonifield. “We had a chance to win it at the end of regulation but the ball fell off the rim. We were able to regroup and play well in overtime.”
Laken Smith led the Tigers with 20 points gained through seven-two pointers, one-three pointer and three of four succesfull free throws. Smith also also had seven rebounds and four steals.
She was supported by Kami Knight and Moregan Wiseman. Knight made 17 points four-twos, one-three and six of 11 free throws as well as seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Wiseman made 15 points with two-two point goals, three-three point goals and three of four free throws as well as two rebounds, five assists and two steals.
The Jeeps were led by Avery Zempter with 13 points. Zempter shot one big three pointer and five-two pointers. She was supported by Ellie Jo Johnson, who shot 12 points with five-two point goals and two of five successful free throws.
Friday night, Waverly will face Northwest at home while the Jeeps go on to Valley.
