Shawnee State men’s basketball play their final game before Christmas on Saturday afternoon when they host Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio).
The Bears got back to .500 last Saturday and are 6-6 on the season. Shawnee State handled Point Park (Penn.) 96-75 behind 16 points and 11 rebounds from Fred Moore.
Mount Vernon Nazarene have started the 2016-17 season 10-3 and are receiving votes in the NAIA Division II Coaches’ Poll. The Cougars snapped a two game losing streak with an 81-75 win over Cincinnati Christian on Dec. 10.
Shawnee State are 13-29 all-time against Mount Vernon Nazarene. The Bears won last year’s matchup over the Cougars 62-61 in Mount Vernon. The two teams have split the last six meetings.
Jayllen Carter has led Shawnee State in scoring so far, with 14.6 points per game to go along with 4.2 rebounds per contest. Frederick Moore has scored 12.8 points per game to go along with a team high 8.4 rebounds per game. Tamal Watkins has continued his excellent freshman campaign, putting up 12.5 points, 3.5 assists, and 3.0 rebounds per game. Jacob Daniels is the only other Bear averaging double digit points, with 11.2 per game.
Brett Vipperman leads Mount Vernon Nazarene with 13.5 points per game. Josh Ashwill (11.5), Joey Schmitz (11.1), Trey McBride (11.0) and Deontae Cole (10.8) have also contributed double digit points this season for the Cougars.
