Notre Dame Titans defeated Coal Grove 37-32 in a close game Tuesday night. The Titans took the lead in the second quarter. Though it was a win for the Titans, they had much to learn that could have helped them pull away from Coal Grove earlier in the game.
Titan Grant Sparks proved to be strong on the court, shooting four field goals, three of which were three pointers. Trevon Turner, however, was the lead shooter of the night, with 14 points, of which six were field goals and two were free throws. Turner shot for four free throws throughout the game, scoring half of his attempts. Isiah Johnson, Sam Kayser, and Aaron Bazler also made major plays throughout the night, with Johnson scoring six, Bazler scoring four, and Kayser scoring two.
“We got into some early foul trouble and made an adjustment to go zone,” Notre Dame Coach Garrick Anderson stated. “I thought we played our zone well and forced them to shoot the basketball from the outside.”
Anderson explained early in the season that his team was going to be dedicated to proving that defense wins ball games. His Titans kept to that belief, keeping a good distance between Coal Grove and the net.
“Offensively, we tried to exploit mismatches that we saw in the paint. It was a total team effort offensively and defensively,” Anderson explained.
