The Portsmouth West Senators are preparing for a difficult battle against the undefeated Wheelersburg Pirates in their last game of the season. The Pirates have had an epic season scoring a total of 367 points in the past 9 weeks and only given up 57 points, shutting out Valley last week and Oak Hill in Week 6 and ending Waverly’s winning streak in Week 7. The Pirates have shown this season that they are an impeccable team with great offensive and defensive strategies and an ability to overcome all situations.
The young Senators have been practicing all week with hopes to gain the advantage. West is currently 3-6 and though they will not being going to the playoffs with Burg, they hope to make the road to playoffs and little bumpy.
Senator coach Ben Johnson stated, “We’ve done like we do every week. We’ve focused on what they do best and how to try to stop that.”
Johnson commented that he may have a bunch of young guys but they have continuously gotten better all season.
“That’s what we aim to do, get better every week,” Johnson commented.
He went on to explain that offensively, the Pirates are good at making big plays. Senator defense is going to have to stop those plays in order to stand a chance. However, West offense is also going to have to come hard.
“Offensively, we have to come up with a way to possess the ball and keep it out of their hands,” Johnson stated.
In addition to running good offensive and defensive strategies, Johnson is also working with special teams to see them come off with some big plays in order to tilt the game in the direction of a Senator victory.
The Wheelersburg Pirates and the Portsmouth West Senators will kick off at Portsmouth West High School at 7 p.m. Following the game, the Pirates will go on to post season games. This will end the season for the Senators, but it is never too late to put another victory under their belts.
