Sometimes in sports the hardest thing to do is to forget a tough loss and immediately bounce back to win the next game, but the Northwest Mohawks were able to forget about a loss to Minford Tuesday and broke away a win against the Portsmouth West Senators Thursday evening.
The Mohawks defeated the Senators 4-0 Thursday evening, righting the ship after a tough loss Tuesday.
“We came back strong after the tough loss to Minford on Tuesday,” Northwest soccer coach Josh Keeney said. “Defense and offense really played well together and communication was better than it has been all season.”
For nearly 20 minutes, the match between the Mohawks and Senators was a stalemate, until Tyler Webb broke through with a header from a cross on the corner to give the Mohawks their first goal of the match, and the only goal of the half.
Webb’s goal gave the Mohawks a 1-0 lead with 20:16 remaining in the half.
Northwest wouldn’t wait as long to find the back of the net in the second half though.
In just under seven minutes from the start of the second half, the Mohawks struck via an unassisted shot from the top by Evan Throckmorton. Throckmorton scored from about 18 feet out to give the Mohawks a 2-0 advantage.
Webb put another point on the board for Northwest with his unassisted break away with about 25 minutes remaining in the match, giving the Mohawks a 3-0 lead over the Senators.
Finally, with 15:27 seconds left in the match, the final goal of the night found its way past the Senators defensive lines, as Throckmorton scored on a free kick.
Throckmorton’s second goal gave the Mohawks a 4-0 lead; one they would not relinquish.
The win over the Senators gives Northwest some momentum as they head into a tough week of soccer.
“We’re looking forward to a tough week coming up with both Waverly and Wheelersburg,” Keeney said. “Those are two very big games for us, as well as them.”
Northwest will take to the pitch Tuesday to face the Waverly Tigers with a 5 p.m. start time in Waverly, Ohio. Then on Thursday, the Mohawks will battle the Wheelersburg Pirates at home in McDermott with another 5 p.m. start.
The Senators will have a tough week as well. After a matchup against the Waverly Tigers at Crew Stadium in Columbus, West will face Minford on Tuesday and West Union Thursday. Both games will be home in West Portsmouth and will begin at about 5:30 p.m.
