As I look at many who proclaim that they are the Church of the Bible I see a Church with a structure, but without power. I see a Church that is weighed down with rules and regulations, which are completely foreign to God Almighty, yet lacking in conviction. I see a Church with money, but one that is spiritually bankrupt. I see a Church with talent, but lacking in the leading of the Holy Spirit. I see a Church that abounds in history, but seemingly without any future. You see brothers and sisters the Church has lost something that is paramount in order for it to be called the Church! It has essentially left the Lord; no Lord no Church!
But people will say, “Man that is a nice Church;” after all it looks good to all who are on the outside. People say, “They have a nice building down on Paradise and Judgment Avenue. They have a paid staff and a great nursery. They have a choir that is one of the best in the state. They have a praise band that will “knock your socks off”. Padded pews, heat in the winter and air conditioning in the summer; what more could anyone ask for?” Problem; they spend all their time talking about religion while leaving the King of kings and the Lord of lords “sitting alone in the foyer waiting for someone to invite Him in”!
As the Lord speaks to the church at Ephesus in the Book of Revelation He says, “I know thy works…” Brothers and sisters Jesus knows everything about those who proclaim His name. He knows what you are doing and what you are not doing. He knows your love and lack of love. He knows if you are a servant or a spectator. He knows if you are walking in the Spirit or you are displaying the deeds of the flesh; He knows! Jesus knows what the church in America is doing today; every dollar feeding the homeless; every cent propelling missions; Jesus knows.
It would be great if we could stop right there. But we need to read the rest of the story. The Lord says. “Nevertheless I have something against you. You have left your first love.” Why is it that people will walk away from Lord? How can they turn their backs on Jesus and the truth of the Gospel when He is the way, the truth, and the life? When I talk to some who are walking away from the things of God I ask them as Paul did, “You were running so well. Who hindered you that you should stop listening to the truth?” I say to them, “You’ve got what you wanted, but you lost what you had”.
When the Church is vibrant and soul winning there is pure joy. There is peace in the midst of the storms of life. There are friendships that can’t be found anywhere else. Let’s stop flirting with religion and commit to pure and unadulterated Christianity. Being sold out to Christ will positively affect you, your family, and the world in which you live. Why don’t you try something new; try Jesus and do it today.
