Cornerstone United Methodist Church 808 Offnere Street in Portsmouth, kicked off the ‘Lunch and Lesson’ series on Wednesday at noon, consisting of a free lunch and an advent lesson with teaching by Dr. Wayne Young.
Dr. Wayne Young, Director of Spiritual Formation at Cornerstone UMC, is the teacher for the advent lessons.
“This is a series of lessons that we call Lunch and a Lesson, and it I meet during the Advent season, the next two Wednesdays. The over arching topic is, when you look at some Old Testament texts, and see how Jesus unwraps them. How he illustrates, and defines God’s character,” Young said. “We looked at the Old Testament text in Isaiah, where God tells us, that,”Unto us, a child is born, unto us, a Son is given.”
Wednesday’s lesson, entitled, “Under Wraps,” focused on God being expectant of his people.
“We also talked about the fact that God is expectant. He has given us his Son, and he is expecting it to bring us closer to him,” he said. “It is important to think about this at this period of time because the season gives us an opportunity to do that, to celebrate what a great thing, an awesome thing God is doing in giving us his son.”
The Lunch and a Lesson events begin with lunch which is served at noon, followed by the advent lesson from 12:30 p.m. until 1 p.m. The series will run on Dec. 9, and 16. In the three sessions they will consider how God is expectant; God is jealous; and God is faithful. Lunch and Lessons are open to everyone to come and have enjoy a nice lunch, and hear God’s word.
