Officials were not releasing much information, but confirmed Tuesday that an officer at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility was injured in an assault by an inmate midday Tuesday. The officer was airlifted from the Lucasville facility to an area hospital following the incident at the maximum-security prison.
“I can confirm we are actively investigating an inmate-on-staff assault that occurred this morning,” Lt. Robert G. Sellers, public affairs commander for the Ohio State Highway Patrol, said in an email to The Daily Times. “I don’t have many details as yet.”
The identity of the officer and the extent of his or her injuries were not released. Calls to the prison were referred to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, which has taken over the investigation.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol did not provide additional information by press time.
The Daily Times is following the story and will publish the latest information as it is received from authorities.
