For decades in Scioto County, one name was synonymous with economic development. That name was Bob Walton. Now, some students will see their educations furthered, thanks to scholarships in his name. The Robert Walton Scholarship is named for the former CAO of Scioto County Executive Director who was known throughout the community as a champion for education opportunity for low-income Scioto County students.
“On behalf of the CAO of Scioto County Board of Trustees and the CAO staff, I am proud to announce this years Robert Walton scholarship award winners,” Steve Sturgill, CAO executive director, said. “Our 2016 award winners are Devon Applegate, Minford High School; Lena Harvey, Portsmouth High School and Kiana Schackart, Valley High School”.
Sturgill said a total of 16 students applied for the scholarship, which are based on household family income and a student’s performance in the classroom.
“For those of us who knew Mr. Walton, this event and the awarding of the scholarships bring back fond memories of our former boss and his compassion for Scioto County,” Sturgill said. “He would be very humbled and proud of the work we continue in his name.”
Sturgill said this is the fifth year of awarding the Robert Walton Scholarship. The funds for the scholarship are generated by the Scholarship Golf Classic. This year’s event will be held Saturday, Aug. 27 at the Shawnee State Golf course. The tournament will begin at 8 a.m. All proceeds from the event are given to the scholarship fund. This will be the 6th year for that event.
