Detectives of the Portsmouth Police Department, along with the Scioto County Coroner’s Office, are continuing an investigation into a suicide that occurred at about 9:15 Tuesday morning in York Park, located on the riverfront.

Officers of the Police Department received a call of a suspicious subject in the park sitting on a bench. An officer of the police department approached the subject and obtained his identity and had a short conversation with him about why he was in the park.

The officer was told by the 36-year-old male subject that he had recently experienced a few let downs in life and was sitting just thinking about things. The officer returned to his vehicle to run a computer check on the subject and while the officer was running a computer check, he observed the man turn a gun on himself.

Life Ambulance and the Scioto County Coroner Darren Adam’s office, responded to the scene and the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The body was transported by the Coroner’s Office to the morgue for autopsy.

It is the policy of the Daily Times not to report the names of suicide victims.

The investigation is continuing and anyone with information that might be beneficial to the investigation is encouraged to call the Portsmouth Police Department Detective Division at 740-354-1600 or Scioto County Coroner Dr. Darren Adams Office at 740-355-0133.

Operations Chief Captain Lynn Brewer said the man’s family was notified of the incident and the Portsmouth Police Department extended their deepest condolences to the family for their loss.
